The Ministry of Education announced the signing of 42 financing contracts for the construction and modernization of student dormitories, following the first call within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). These investments aim at the creation of 1,087 new accommodation places and the modernization of 9,573 existing places. The Minister of Education, Ligia Deca, emphasized, during a Government meeting, the priorities regarding the development of the university infrastructure, underlining the importance of ensuring decent accommodation conditions for students: ""Sometimes, securing a place in the dormitory can make the difference between continuing your studies and to give them up. We want every young person to have access to an environment where they can reach their potential, and increasing the number of places on university campuses is essential to this. We must eliminate the conditioning of the students' academic course by the financial possibilities of the family". Through the PNRR, the Ministry of Education was allocated 260 million euros for investments in dormitories, canteens and recreation spaces. Following a second call, there were submitted projects for 2,664 new accommodation places and for the modernization of 7,199 places, with the projects to be contracted by the end of October.
As part of the National Construction Program, the Ministry of Education is also financing the construction of 30 student dormitories, which will add 10,244 places to stay in 13 university centers in the country. Three of these have already been completed and another ten are in the execution phase.
Through these measures, the Government aims to support students with limited financial resources and to create favorable conditions for the educational and personal development of young people.
